Wyozona Cup 2026: San Diego, Here We Come!

The search for the next Wyozona Cup destination is always an exciting, somewhat chaotic affair. Each year, the members of the WyoZona Sportsmans Club take turns adding their dream location to the "Wheel of Destinations." It's a system that, in theory, ensures fairness and variety. But let’s be honest—sometimes, the fix is in. This year, the plot thickened in a way that only the Wyozona Cup could deliver.

We’ve got six board members, and everyone gets one shot at adding their top pick. For the 2026 destination, three out of six board members threw their weight behind Northern Michigan—Traverse City, to be exact. And who can blame them? Sure, the golf is great, but the views? They might just outshine the fairways. In a shocking twist, it felt like a collusion moment, as Northern Michigan came in with a hefty 50% chance of being chosen. The other contenders—Banff, San Diego, and St. George—were stuck with a mere 17% shot each.

Dinner on Friday night was the big reveal. As the names were drawn, we could practically hear the collective groan of the San Diego camp. After all, with Northern Michigan poised to win, it seemed all but decided. But then, in a dramatic turn of events, fate stepped in like the ’85 NBA Draft. The cold envelope was opened, and out of nowhere... San Diego emerged as the victor! The drama was palpable, and the golf world—at least our little corner of it—was left in disbelief.

Now, let’s talk about San Diego. People might think of it as the home of Torrey Pines, one of the most iconic golf courses in the country. And yes, we will be playing Torrey, no question. But there’s so much more to this Southern California gem. The city is packed with great golf, and we’ve got multiple guys who have been going to San Diego year after year. When you vacation in the same place for so long, you start to develop strong opinions. "This is the best course." "That one has the best views." There’s no shortage of "you have to play this" conversations happening in the group.

But the real challenge lies in how we’ll structure our golf over the four days. We’ve got some tough decisions to make. Do we opt for a par 3 course to mix it up and ease the strain of hitting driver after driver for four straight days? You know, we're not getting any younger. But then again, there’s always that desire to hit those long fairways. Should we go with a 2v2 format, mixing it up with best ball, scramble, and maybe even some net play on the par 3 course (if we can convince everyone to go for it)? Or, if that doesn’t work out, we might stick to a more traditional 2v2 alternate shot for the final day. And just when you think things couldn’t get crazier, this could finally be the year we reach 8 or even 12 players. That means the points—and the drama—could be more intense than ever before. Think Ryder Cup, but with a little more “we’re all friends, right?” vibes.

San Diego is calling. The courses, the weather, the opportunity to make this the most competitive Wyozona Cup yet—it’s all coming together. Who will rise to the challenge? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure: the 2026 Wyozona Cup is going to be a year to remember.

San Diego, here we come!
