Wyozona Cup: Day 2 Recap – Wyoming Comes Back to Even the Score

WHAT…A…DAY! Langdon Farms set the stage for an unforgettable second round of the Wyozona Cup, with the team scramble format bringing the intensity up a notch. The weather was perfect—73°F, a slight breeze, and bubble clouds—creating an ideal setting for some exciting golf action.

The first six holes felt like a tennis match, with each team taking the lead twice and swapping positions constantly. By the time they reached the 9th hole, Team Wyoming was 1 UP, and they showed off their putting skills by draining a mammoth 60+ foot birdie putt—flapping those birdie wings for Team Arizona to see. But as has become tradition in the Wyozona Cup, the 10th hole came back to bite Wyoming. They were 1 UP, but that lead seemed to hang on forever. The next six holes saw no change in the score, with both teams grinding it out, playing steady, yet intense golf.

On hole 16, Team Wyoming squandered an incredible drive, and Team Arizona seized the opportunity, staying steady with a par to bring the match back to all square. Heading into the final two holes, the match was up for grabs.

The 17th hole, a long par-3 at 217 yards with an elevated green, was the next test. Wyoming managed to find the green, but they faced a daunting 75+ foot putt. They somehow managed to squeak out a par, and Team Arizona, not to be outdone, responded with some heroics from the ole bull to also save par. With that, it was all square once again as they headed to the 18th hole for the second straight day—this time with Team Wyoming getting the first crack at it.

The 18th was another par-5, and Wyoming hit a long drive down the right side rough, leaving them 255 yards from the hole. Their strategy was to lay up, leaving them with 100 yards out. After two big shots, Matt tried to go for it but watched as his ball landed just a yard into the water. With their third shot, the team didn’t help themselves much with their chips, leaving them with a 25-foot putt. But just like on the 9th, they drained it for a birdie!

Meanwhile, Team Arizona was making their way down the fairway, starting with a great drive that put them center-cut about 250 yards out. They knew they had to match the birdie to get the half-point, but with a layup and a rough third shot just short of the green, their hopes faded. Two chips and a solid putt from the ole bull couldn’t quite seal the deal, and Wyoming clinched the win, bringing the score to 1-1.

Team Wyoming's Quote: "Can you say flashbacks? We saw the lead slip on 16, and we thought, here it goes again. But what a putt to put the pressure on! Without that putt, we don’t win. Just clutch. Welcome to a new day. 1-1 now!"

Team Arizona's Quote: "16 gave us life. They were on the tee box, and you could see the sails drop a bit... we had their wind! But that putt on 18 changed our whole attack point. We knew we needed a birdie to get the half-point. Good golf by them."

With the score tied 1-1, the Wyozona Cup is up for grabs as the teams head into day 3. The drama is only just beginning!
