Wyozona Cup: Day 4 Recap – Arizona Clinches First Cup with a Dominant Victory

The final day of the Wyozona Cup was set up for an epic showdown. With 3 points still up for grabs, the teams headed to The Reserve - North Course for the decisive match play round, with handicaps coming into play. And, of course, the weather—wet. Arizona described it as “raining like crazy” the whole match, while in Oregon terms, it was probably just another Saturday! Regardless, the course handled the water brilliantly, but the conditions only added to the drama.

Match 1 – Josh vs Mike:From the get-go, Josh and Mike put on a thrilling back-and-forth battle, resembling a tennis match more than a golf contest. No one managed to get more than a 1-stroke lead, and it was a nail-biter all the way to the 16th hole, where Josh finally managed to pull it back to all square (AS). On the 18th, Mike found himself in deep trouble after a duffed tee shot and a worm burner that left him laying 3 with about 250 yards to go. Josh, trying to lay up, lost his grip on his club and sent it into the water. Mike chipped it close and two-putted for a safe par, while Josh made a similar chip, but his first putt blew past the hole, leaving him with a tricky 10-footer to tie. Unfortunately for Josh, the putt didn’t drop, and Mike won the hole to secure the victory, giving Team Wyoming its first point of the day and narrowing the gap to 3-1 in favor of Arizona.

Match 2 – Matt vs Jake:This match was closely watched on the leaderboards, as it fell behind the pace of Josh and Mike. On the front nine, it seemed like Wyoming might sneak away with a tie, as Matt was up by 2-3 strokes, and Patrick was holding a 1-2 stroke lead over Shaun. However, the back nine proved to be a different story. The tension rose as they reached the 17th hole, with Matt and Kober all square (AS) and Shaun taking a 2-stroke lead over Patrick. On the 18th, Kober delivered when it mattered most, draining a clutch putt to defeat Matt and secure the 5th and final point for Arizona.

With that, Arizona had swept the final day, securing all 3 points in decisive fashion and clinching a 5-1 victory in the Wyozona Cup. It was more than enough to secure the Cup, with Arizona dominating the final round and leaving no room for doubt. The victory marked their first-ever Wyozona Cup win and sealed the deal with a thrilling finish.

Final Tally:

  • Arizona: 5 points

  • Wyoming: 1 point

With a commanding victory on the final day, Arizona proved themselves the superior team, and the Wyozona Cup will now reside with them as they celebrate this historic win. Congratulations, Arizona!
